Overview
Mission The Select Seed Company Ltd. (SelectSeed Co., SelectSeed) supports Forest Genetics Council of B.C. (FGC) objectives for the development of seed orchard facilities to meet the provincial demand for high quality, ecologically adapted tree seed through investments, cooperative work with FGC members, and effective program management. SelectSeed undertakes contracts to establish seed orchards when existing and planned orchard capacity will not meet the objectives of the FGC. Orchard development by SelectSeed will proceed through long-term contractual agreements in which SelectSeed provides orchard trees and some proportion of funding, and the contractor supplies land and orchard management services. Contracts Contracts with SelectSeed will be for seed orchard development and management. The contract term will normally be for the production cycle of a seed orchard (approximately 25 years). Contract development is through bidding and negotiation procedures. Location of orchards Orchards are often located away from the zone in which seed will be planted. This is done for two primary reasons:
The current phase of orchard development work to be undertaken by SelectSeed involves the orchards and general locations listed on this website. Incentives Quality seed from conifer seed orchards may be sold to forest companies and government agencies with reforestation obligations on Crown land in British Columbia. Seed orchard management contracts may include incentives for excellent management performance. Such incentives are negotiable, but may take the form of a percentage of seed from the orchard remaining with the contractor for sale or use. Contracts that share seed production will also share the risk of the business venture. Type of work Conifer seed orchard management is similar in many ways to fruit orchard management. Grafted trees are planted at carefully planned intervals on suitable areas, and cultured to maintain health, vigour, and the most suitable crown form for cone production. When the seed orchard begins to produce cones, crops are managed to ensure adequate pollination and cone health. Cones are harvested, and seed is extracted through processing. Processing is normally done on contract with firms experienced in this work. Grafted trees to be used in the seed orchards are provided by SelectSeed, unless otherwise agreed. An orchard development contract includes the following basic activities:
